AGGRESSIVE RESCUE DOG. HELP!?

Asked: AGGRESSIVE RESCUE DOG. HELP!?

Hello, I really hope someone can help me with our dog problem. Let me start from the beginning.
We have a 4 month female German Shepherd. She is a very sweet energetic puppy. We thought she could do with a friend so, we done some searching and came across a 4 year old female Groenendael, Freya. Now, we didn't want a puppy as training two puppies at once would be a bit of a
strain on me, so I wanted a dog that already knew commands and was well behaved. After reading the information on Freya, we gave her owner a call.
We were told that she was very well behaved, knew commands, walked well on and off the leash and was good with other dogs, cats and children, but had been abused by her previous owner for the first 2.5 years of her life.
Even though she had previously been abused, what we were told was as if she had overcome the abuse and was now a very good dog. We decided she was the dog for us so drove two hours with our puppy to get her. Once we stepped into Freya's home, she went for Kyra, this was a big slap
in the face for us, as we was told she was good with other dogs. Her owner then reassured us that it was just a territorial thing, so suggested we take the dogs to a neutral location. We went to a field and the dogs were fine together, Freya didn't growl or go to bite kyra at all. By this, we did agree that it was just because a strange, small energetic dog had come into her house. So… we decided to take her home, thinking she would be okay when out of the home she had been for the last 1.5 years.
Problem is… it wasn't fine. Freya is very cautious of everything, and very aware of everything around her, as soon as Kyra or another dog went near her, she would growl and lunge at them, though she would stop as soon as we said No. We have been watching her like a hawk, ready to correct her at the slightest sign of aggression. ( which is hard as she actually shows NO sign at all, till she growls ) . On Saturday we took the dogs for a walk, and a dog ran up to Freya and attacked her, since then, she has got a lot worse, whenever Kyra goes near Freya, she growls at Kyra. ( when she growls she also stares at Kyra) .On Sunday we took them out for a walk again, and another dog came running to say hello, and Freya attacked it. We was so shocked by this,we went and bought Freya a muzzle.
when back in the house, Freya just growls and stares at Krya ( not always, sometimes Kyra can sit or lie down next to Freya with no problem) . On Monday, I was sitting playing with Kyra, I rolled a ball across the floor and Kyra went running to get it and ran back to me to give it to me, Freya was lying down next to me, and as soon as Krya started running to me, Freya lunged at Kyra, growling and baring her teeth, with a quick, stern "No" , Freya Stopped.
It is getting quite worrying as Freya honestly shows no sign that she is going to attack/growl, So we have no way to stop it before she goes for Kyra (or another dog) . She also got in a fight with our cat, we don't know what happened though, we just heard the cat in pain and Freya growling at her. (luckily the wasn't harmed).
Another thing about Freya – She never plays with anything, she wont touch a ball, stick, anything. She's aware of everything going on around her,She is scared of loud sudden noises, she freaks out big time at the vacuum cleaner, or a chair being dragged across the floor. She doesn't seem like a happy dog, she seems so scared and afraid of everything. She barely wags her tail also. She doesn't act like a 4 year old dog, more like a 10year old that just wants to lie around and sleep all day.She walks around a lot with her ears back and head down, but still looking everywhere. ( she does walk normally too, very stiff body though, and ears stuck up straight. She seems very tense all the time.
We really need some help with Freya, we don't want to return her as she can be a very sweet dog but, we just don't know what to do to help her. I want her to know that not everything is scary, and she can have fun and be a normal dog, not a scared, anxious aggressive dog. I hope maybe someone can give us some tips on how to help Freya, in scared one day she will badly harm Kyra or aanother Dog.

German Shepherd or Golden Retriever?

Asked: German Shepherd or Golden Retriever?

I'm getting a puppy in about a month, it'll be my first dog.
I have a large area for it to play around and I am going to leave it outside in the night in its HUGE kennel (about the size of a bedroom) and I am probably going to be out of the house for 4 hours only week days, I can exercise either of them, and tire them with a jog or play before leaving.
Also my dog must be friendly to strangers.
Which one should I get?

Golden Retriever or German Shepherd a better fit for my lifestyle?

Feb 8, 2013   //   by Administrator   //   Blog  //  No Comments

Asked: Golden Retriever or German Shepherd a better fit for my lifestyle?

I love both breeds to death, but I was wondering what breed you guys think might be a better fit for my lifestyle? (I'm not getting any dog though until I've thought it all through, have the money saved up for vet visits, am ready to take on the responsibility, etc.)

Ok. So here's a bit about me;

I really love to be outside, especially when it's warmer out. I LOVE camping, I like hiking, walking, biking (as in bicycles, not motorcycles), and I go on at least one long walk or a jog/run every day.
I am generally a sociable person. I don't have a huge social life and I'm definitely not a party-er, but I like to have friends over on occasion, and I would prefer it if my dog wasn't viciously barking at them/jumping all over them (I know that has a lot more to do with training and socialization though, which is why I would definitely be enrolling my dog in training classes from the start!)
I would like to have a dog that I could take places (where dogs are allowed) in public such as beaches (in my state almost all beaches allow dogs on-leash), Petsmart, public parks, just walking down the road to outdoor shopping centers or markets, etc.
I want a dog that can potentially protect me.
I would also like to be able to relax from time-to-time in my house without my dog pacing the floors (granted only if he got a walk/jog/other form of exercise already that day).
Also, how do these breeds compare in ease of training? And how would these dogs adjust to living in a house with a yard vs. living in an apartment or something similar? (Other than having a dog in an apartment being really difficult anyway)

Asked: Im thinking about getting a German Shepherd?

Hi, Im looking into getting a GSD in the holidays (in about 2-3 months). How much do they eat and how much exercise to they need? Foodwise i am unsure though exercise, i can talk him for a walk for about 40 mins in the morning and in the afternoon about a 45 min jog/run or 1 hr walk. I also have a pool, will by plenty of toys for mental stimulation and can supply 10 – 15 mins obedience training a day. My family and myself also plan on going out every weekend to the beach, park or dog park so the do g can socialize. If there is anything else to know i would love to hear. Do you think a GSD is suitable for a family?

Thanks icon smile Im thinking about getting a German Shepherd?

Best running partner; Husky, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd or German Shepherd?

Aug 3, 2012   //   by Administrator   //   Blog  //  No Comments

Asked: Best running partner; Husky, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd or German Shepherd?

i like all 4. i already have a german shepherd shes currently 6 years old however and is only taken on walks, no runs. she's timid and im not sure how she'd react to training after a life of not doing so. but i do want to keep my options open.

at first ill only be running about 5 miles over the course of an hour or so. that will increase to ten miles plus, over time of course. my birthday's coming up and i'd like to get one of the first mentioned 3 dogs young and train with it for long distance running. im pretty out of practice to, thanks to an injury i havent been able to keep up with running for about 5 weeks.

but my question is, which dog would be the optimal long distance running partner? i live in southern california so a pretty warm climate especially in summer. but im not an idiot i wont be running at noon on 100 degree summer days or anything. however i am new to this. of course ill do enough research to make sure my dog is kept safe and isnt overworked. i want to make sure they enjoy the running as much as i do, in a safe way ^^

thanks
im really leaning towards the A. shep btw
